Interview

For class we had to interview parents with children who have disabilities.  The family that I chose to interview told me about the extra curricular activities that their child loves to do.  There is a group called Respite Care where a "sitter" will come take the child and participate in extra curricular activities.  This interview really touched me because they talked about how their daughter just wants to have a normal life.  This made me think about all the other students that are in school who want to participate in all of these activities just like every other student.  It brought tears to my eyes just thinking about how schools might limit the openings for students with disabilities who really want to participate in those activities.  I think that the Respite Care is a good program to help families out and take the children who go do what they really want to do.  This particular child got to be involved in cheerleading, soccer, softball and basketball. I think that families that really work hard with their child and want the best for them are able to find ways to help them participate in activities that they enjoy.

  1. I did my interview with an old friend who has a son with Down's syndrome. Her son is 9, and he participates in basketball and karate which he loves, but she knows that one day, as the kids get older and the sports teams become more competitive, these activities will no longer be an option for him.
She has a an advocacy website called www.goodjobbuddy.org through which she shares information about Down's syndrome. She covers many different topics pertaining to having a child with a disability. You might want to check it out to see if she has any information that is related to your topic. Even if you don't find anything for your blog, it is an awesome website to check out nonetheless.

  2. The interview I did was for a child with ADHD and his mother was telling me a lot about the extra curricular activities they have tried for him. The one that they found has been working the best because of his lack of impulse control is taking martial arts. He loves taking the class and enjoys going back each week. They actually placed him in martial arts to take the place of him an occupational therapist each week. They seem very pleased and it just goes to show how much of an impact extra curricular activities can have on children.
