Hello! Welcome to my blog:) I am starting an adventure in finding more information related to extra curricular activities for students with special needs. Some of the questions that I have pondered include: What activities after school could students with disabilities participate in and feel included with other students? How can a school system enhance the overall school experience for students with disabilities through extra curricular activities? What roles should the families play?
April,
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if some extra curricular activities that are already in place in the schools would accept students with special needs with no objection? I would imagine maybe art club or intramurals.
I think a lot of the schools problems in general with all of the budget cuts have to deal with cutting these extra curricular activities. It would be hard to include everyone if they can't even have the activities. I wonder if that might be something you would want to look into?
I'm hoping that as you find the answers to these questions that parent involvement is crucial. These organizations may need volunteers to help with all of the students.
I am excited to keep reading and to see what your findings are on this topic!!
April,
ReplyDeleteGreat topic choice! I had never really thought about extra curricular activity opportunities for students who have special needs, so I cannot wait to see what you find out. I know that extra curricular activities are so important in the lives of my own children. It provides them with the opportunity to learn new skills and make friends. Children with special needs should have these types of opportunities too, but I wonder what types of activities are available to them. I know from being a Girl Scout leader in the past that any girl was allowed to participate, no matter what their needs are, but I don't know if all activities are as accepting. I'm looking forward to following your blog and learning along with you!

April,
ReplyDeleteYou're off to a good start. As you progress, you might want to focus on specific disabilities or types of disabilities (e.g. physical, emotional) and compare and contrast the options available for each. It's always good to start with a broad topic and then let your research bring more focus to your inquiries. Looking forward to seeing where your questions take you!
